I generally think PNG is big, and JPG is for photographs. I might be wrong about PNG however, in either case I wasn't really trying to showcase the beauty of my desktop. The background is fairly plain and was chosen as it allows me to easily find icons.

*Edit* Looks like the PNG was only 3x as big. =s

Yeah, but it also doesn't look as shitty. If you save with some compression it looks just as good but is less than twice the size (around 500 kb).

Or you could use jpeg and get it to be much smaller with some artifacts, still looking better than a gif.

you know you can use gimp or something and not really get horrible artifacts with jpegs right?

No idea. I don't really work with images much and have all sorts of preconceptions and biases that are completely unfounded.
