Nostalgia has a way of painting everything from our past in a Rose shade of pink; Music,Movies, and Games as all susceptible to its fated touch. Many people for example consider Mega Man 2 to be the best Mega Man game, However Mega Man 2 was before my time(at least coherently as it came out when I was 2) So I consider Mega Man X3 to be the best MegaMan game. Even if I try to go back and play Mega Man 2 to see why people Consider it the best I never will, as I grew up on the X series rather then the Original. However thats not to say that MegaMan 2 or X3 are perfect games, but Games do get better over time in theory MegaMan X4 is probably better then 3 (and in fact in many ways it is, as it has Full Motion Anime sequences and Red Book Audio) however in my eyes X3 is still better.
However there are a few select things that do stand the test of time and prove that they are indeed as great as you remember them. Full Throttle just happens to be one of them. And by Full Throttle I do not mean a ridiculous energy drink or Charlie's Angels movie, But the Brilliant game by Lucas Arts back in 1995. Full Throttle is one of the last true 2D adventure (The Dig followed by The Curse of Monkey Island being the last two) created by Lucas Arts and is also one of the shortest by Comparison, However what it lacks in length it makes up for in leaps and bounds in substance.
Full Throttle is perhaps the only game in existence where the plot centers around a Motorcycle gang and the president of a Motorcycle Company, and if thats not reason enough to play the game then the story itself will be. Full Throttle despite its ludicrous notice of hovercraft and motorcycles is a game that takes itself rather seriously, The game deals with some serious issues such as Betrayal, abandonment and deceit. However the game's creators are a hilarious bunch and in between all the serious story scenes, light hearted humor ensues. Most of this humor is through the commentary of the protagonist; Ben.
Much of the game's charm comes from its high quality voice acting which actually includes some Hollywood talent. Roy Conrad as Ben and Mark Hamil as Adrian Ripburger(From StarWars Fame) both are quite well cast for their roles one of Lucas Arts best casting job ever done.
The Game's graphics are dated by today's standard, a mix of 2D and 3D graphics however Full Throttle's Cartoon look is perfect for its surreal setting. All the backgrounds are vivid and unique, and each contain their own style. Each of the game's Characters have their own unique look to them (except maybe the rottwheelers who are rather similar). Most of the in game characters are really brought to life by their voice actors though.
The Game also contains a soundtrack by a real band in California called The Gone Jackals, as well as some other random tracks. While none of the game's tracks are "Video Game Music" the hard rock and southern folk/country fits with the game's theme.
Full Throttle is one of those select games that I return to every year, along with Chrono Trigger,Mega Man X3, Sonic 1, and Super Metroid. One of those rare games which can make me laugh regardless of the number of times I play it. Full Throttle may be short(infact if you know how to play it, you can beat it in about half an hour) but every minute that you play will be some of the most fun and immersing minutes of your gaming life.
